Sniper's Alley Guests
Jonathan Ashworth
episode 10
Jonathan Ashworth is a British political figure, broadcaster and former Labour MP who represented Leicester South from 2011 until 2024. During his time in Parliament, he held several senior opposition roles, including Shadow Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, a position he held through much of the COVID-19 pandemic. He later served as Shadow Secretary of State for Work and Pensions and Shadow Paymaster General.
Before entering Parliament, Jonathan worked for the Labour Party and served as a special adviser to Gordon Brown, including during Brown’s time as Chancellor of the Exchequer and Prime Minister. Following the 2024 general election, Jonathan became Chief Executive of Labour Together, a political think tank, a role he held until 2025.
In January 2026, Jonathan suffered a stroke at the age of 47. Despite being fit and active, he initially struggled to recognise the symptoms. Since then, he has spoken publicly about his experience, helping raise awareness of stroke symptoms and the realities of recovery.
Jonathan joined Rob Birnie and Emily Silverwood-Cope on Sniper’s Alley: The Gen X Podcast to discuss what happened, the warning signs he initially overlooked and how the experience has changed his perspective on health, ageing and life in midlife.
Sniper’s Alley: The Gen X Podcast explores the challenges of navigating the years when the realities of getting older begin to catch up with us. Jonathan’s story offers an honest perspective on stroke recovery and a reminder that none of us should take our health for granted.
